It’s always been said that “health is wealth”. With the growing number of fitness centres and gyms available locally pre-COVID period, it seems that the easiest way to stay fit is by paying a hefty amount for a gym membership. However, with the current pandemic restrictions, you’re probably wondering how you can stay fit when the gym is closed and you are stuck at home managing your budget amidst the uncertainty around.

Fret not as treadmills and spin bikes aren't the only ways to stay in shape. Living a healthy life and engaging in physical activities doesn’t need to be expensive.

Here are 5 ways to get physically fit without spending too much.

1. Do bodyweight exercises
Doing bodyweight exercises is a simple way to get active and improves flexibility, balance, and overall strength without the need for any fancy gym equipment. Its various forms and styles target specific body parts, from your arms to your core and to your legs.

2. Work out with a friend virtually
Studies show that people are more successful in committing to a workout routine when there’s someone else working along towards a similar goal. It’s a fun way to bond with your friend because you won’t need a trainer to spot you, and you have someone to encourage you when you start feeling a little lazy.

3. Take up running
If you really want to amp up your fitness, try giving running or jogging a go. You only need to invest in a good, sturdy pair of running shoes to get started, and a good path or location to explore on foot. Do this around your neighbourhood for a start or head to the nearest park.

It’s a cheap way to get healthy and fit when you keep it simple and stick to the basics as running is more cost-effective than any gym classes or memberships.

4. Go online
The internet is a treasure trove of workout videos that won’t cost you a cent. There are thousands of free-to-watch fitness videos on YouTube such as aerobics, Zumba, or yoga to provide you with the option to change your routine every day depending on your mood.

There are also some websites which only require you to sign up for their newsletter, in exchange for access to their videos, which you can download and watch at your convenient time.

You can also go for online deals that offer trial classes for workout sessions and sports activities, allowing you to try different types of exercises. As a result, you can vary your workout, avoid boredom, and find options that make a good mix for a fun workout.

5. Walk in your neighbourhood
Studies have shown that walking for at least 30 minutes is a good start for those looking to begin a healthy exercise habit. Start off with a shorter distance and gradually increase the pace and distance once your fitness has improved over time. This is also a good way to strengthen your legs before delving further into running.
